Project: Wildlife Hazard Assessment - Ocala
Client: City of Ocala
Location: Ocala, Florida
![]() | In accordance with FAA Certalert No. 09-10, Environmental Resource Solutions, Inc. (ERS) is conducting Ocala International Airport’s (OCF) Wildlife Hazard Assessment (WHA). ERS’ methodology for the WHA is compliant to Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 14-Part 139.337. ERS began the WHA at OCF in November 2009. The WHA is a 12 month wildlife survey consisting of fixed-point surveys, monthly spotlight surveys, small mammal trapping, and other general wildlife observations. Fixed-point surveys are conducted twice a month at nine, static monitoring stations. The monitoring stations are located throughout the Airport Operation Area (AOA). Each bi-weekly survey consists of two dawn and two dusk surveys to be completed over a 48-hour period. ERS biologists record all wildlife species observed at each station within a 10-minute interval. Spotlight surveys are conducted once a month, following a dusk fixed-point survey. ERS biologists drive along service and perimeter roads on OCF property and record all wildlife observations. Small-mammal trapping occurs twice during the assessment, once each during the spring and fall seasons. Twenty standard snap traps are set 10’ apart along five 200’ transects located throughout the AOA. All trapped species are recorded and will be included in the WHA report. |
In addition to species observations, ERS biologists also record on-site and off-site habitat types, human activities and other environmental factors that could influence the occurrence of potentially hazardous wildlife at OCF. FAA AC No. 150/5200-33B Hazardous Wildlife Attractants On or Near Airports provides guidance to help identify potential attractants on and offsite. ERS biologists maintain a continuous dialogue with OCF managers and operations department to ensure that the WHA is conducted in a safe and professional manner and also to ensure that ERS has the most current wildlife strike and wildlife management information specific to OCF.
Based on the results of the year-long study, ERS will provide OCF with specific recommendations for habitat management and wildlife control.
