Project: Wildlife Hazard Assessment - Monterey
Client: Monterey Peninsula Airport District
Location: Monterey, Cailfornia
![]() | In January 2010, the Environmental Resource Solutions, Inc. (ERS)/SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) team initiated a Wildlife Hazard Assessment (WHA) at Monterey Peninsula Airport (MRY). In accordance with FAA Advisory Circular 150/5200-36 “Qualifications for Wildlife Biologist Conducting Wildlife Hazard Assessments and Training Curriculums for Airport Personnel Involved in Controlling Wildlife Hazards at Airports”, ERS and SWCA coupled to complete the 12-month assessment. Amy Wester, ERS’ Qualified Airport Wildlife Biologist, serves as the project manager. Prior to beginning field services, the ERS/SWCA team conducted interviews with the airport manager and airport operations personnel and collected wildlife strike and observation records in order to determine previous wildlife observations or strike occurrences. At the time of the interviews, a site visit of MRY property was conducted to gain knowledge of property boundaries and fencing locations, inspect areas where previous wildlife observations or strikes have occurred, and establish appropriate fixed-point survey locations. The bulk of the preparation for the WHA report is spent conducting 12 months of surveys to identify the species utilizing MRY property, how species occurrence may change with each season, and their movement patterns onsite, as well as offsite. |
The ERS/ SWCA survey methods include fixed-point surveys, night spotlight surveys, small mammal surveys, and general observations.
Following the collection and compilation of the species occurrence and species attractants data sets, a detailed WHA report will be prepared and submitted to MRY. ERS and SWCA will review the report to ensure that it includes the results of the bi-weekly surveys, all of the observed wildlife species, the observed potential wildlife attractants both on- and off-site, recommendations for eliminating and alternatively minimizing the effects of the wildlife attractants on and near the airport, and all appropriate exhibits. ERS and SWCA staff remains available for consult to MRY staff throughout this process to ensure successful completion of the WHA
